GARAGE & STORAGE

How to Inventory Garage Bins and Storage Units

A photo of a plastic bin is not an inventory. The useful answer is a path a family member can follow without calling the person who organized it.
STEP 01

Build the location path

Start broad and move inward: property, building or unit, wall or aisle, rack or cabinet, shelf, bin and box. Stop when the saved path is specific enough to find the item quickly.

STEP 02

Label the physical container

Give each bin a short human-readable name or number that matches the digital location. Avoid codes that only one person understands.

STEP 03

Photograph contents, not just lids

Take one open-bin overview and individual photos for valuable, easy-to-confuse or frequently borrowed items.

STEP 04

Track movement

When an item is borrowed, moved or placed into a project box, update the status and location immediately. A stale precise location is worse than an honest general one.
