INSURANCE INVENTORY

How to Create a Home Inventory for Insurance

A useful home inventory is more than a list. It connects each item to clear proof, a reasonable replacement value and the place it belongs—before a fire, flood, theft or major storm makes those details hard to remember.
STEP 01

Start with one room

Choose the easiest room, not the most valuable one. Photograph the room from each doorway, then work shelf by shelf or wall by wall so the process has a visible finish line.

STEP 02

Capture identifying details

Save the item name, brand, model, SKU or serial number when available. Photograph labels separately when the information is too small to read in the room view.

STEP 03

Record replacement cost

Use the current cost to replace the item with a comparable new item—not a yard-sale value. An AI estimate can suggest a range, but you should confirm it and use a professional appraisal for unusually valuable property.

STEP 04

Attach proof

Keep receipts, appraisals, certificates, grading reports, warranties and provenance with the item. Note when a document exists even if the sensitive file remains in an encrypted device-only vault.

STEP 05

Review the total

Group the inventory by room and category, then compare the whole-home replacement-value total with the personal-property limit shown on your insurance declarations page.
